In 1950’s, Harvey M. Powers, along with colleagues C. Willard Smith and George Hershey, are the key consultants for the plans for the state-of-the-art proscenium theatre with open stage to be built in the new Coleman Hall.  The University Theatre Fund is established.

In 1954, Professor of Art, George Hershey, was hired to teach the first courses in scene and costume design in a joint appointment between the English and Art Departments.  In 1972, the association with the Art Department was ended and the position continued as a second faculty position in design in the Theatre Program.
